Arugam Bay, East Coast, Sri Lanka

Arugam Bay

Destination Guide

A long sandy sweep on the wild south-east coast, Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka’s surf capital — a famously mellow town built around one of the best point breaks in Asia, and a gateway to lagoons, elephants and the empty beaches beyond.

The wave that made the town

Arugam Bay’s Main Point is a long, peeling right-hander that draws surfers from across the world, with gentler breaks nearby for beginners and a string of named points up and down the coast. The town has grown around the wave but kept its barefoot, beach-shack soul — board racks, smoothie bars, and a sunset crowd that has just come in from the water.

More than surf

You don’t have to surf to love A-Bay. Lagoon safaris bring elephants, crocodiles and birdlife within reach of town; nearby Kumana National Park is a birding paradise; and the coast hides genuinely empty beaches — Whisky Point, Pottuvil, Panama — for those who want sand without a soul on it. It is the most relaxed corner of the island.

A different rhythm

Arugam Bay runs on the opposite season to the south coast and at half the pace. It is remote — the journey is part of the deal — but that distance is exactly why it has kept its character while the south has filled up. Come for the surf, or simply for a week of doing very little, very well.

When to come

The season runs roughly April to October, when the south-west monsoon grooms the east-coast swell and the weather is dry and hot. Outside those months the town largely closes and the wave goes flat — timing here matters more than almost anywhere on the island.

Practical information

Getting there

A long but scenic drive — around 7–8 hours from Colombo, or 3–4 from Yala/the south-east. Often reached on a loop down through the hills and Ella.

Where to stay

Surf cabanas and beach guesthouses in town, plus a growing handful of stylish boutique retreats along the quieter points.

What to eat

Fresh seafood, big breakfasts and the international café food that follows surfers everywhere — plus excellent east-coast rice and curry.

Best time to visit

April–October, the east-coast dry season and prime surf window. The town is very quiet — and the surf flat — outside those months.

Ajit’s tip

Pair Arugam Bay with Yala and the hills rather than treating it as a day trip — the drive is long, and A-Bay only gives up its charm if you stay long enough to slow down.
