Beaches & Coast
Sri Lanka’s great coastal secret is its two monsoons. While one coast is being rained on, the other is in flawless sunshine — so there is always a beach somewhere on the island at its very best. We simply send you to the right one for the month you travel.
The south & west coast
From the colonial charm of Galle down to the headlands of Tangalle, the south coast is the island’s honeymoon and family heartland in season — golden bays, boutique villas, blue-whale watching off Mirissa, and turtles coming ashore at night. Best from roughly December to April.
The east coast
When the south is wet, the east is glorious. Trincomalee’s Uppuveli and Nilaveli offer some of the widest, calmest beaches in the country, with whale watching and the coral of Pigeon Island just offshore. Best from May to September.
Surf & the wild edges
Arugam Bay is one of Asia’s great point breaks and a laid-back surf town from April to October. We also know the quieter coves — the undeveloped stretches near Kalpitiya for kitesurfing and dolphins, and hidden bays where yours are the only footprints.
Where to go
Mirissa
Blue-whale watching and a lively crescent beach (Dec–Apr).
Tangalle
Quiet luxury, wide bays and private villas on the deep south.
Trincomalee
East-coast calm — Nilaveli, Uppuveli and Pigeon Island (May–Sep).
Arugam Bay
World-class surf and a relaxed traveller scene (Apr–Oct).
South & west coast: December–April. East coast & Arugam Bay: May–September. There is always a coast in season.
“Build your beach days at the end of the trip, not the start. After the hills and the parks, a few slow mornings by the sea is exactly the right way to finish.”
