Yala
Sri Lanka’s most famous national park, Yala pairs dramatic dry-zone scenery — lagoons, rock outcrops and scrub — with the highest density of leopards anywhere on earth.
Leopard country
Because there are no larger predators to fear, Yala’s leopards move with confidence, often in daylight, draped over rocks or crossing the tracks. Beyond leopards, the park holds elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, peacocks and a wealth of birdlife, all set against some of the island’s most photogenic landscapes.
Doing the safari well
Yala is popular, and the difference between a great game drive and a frustrating one is the guide and the timing. We use experienced private trackers, enter at the gate’s opening, and avoid the convoy by knowing where to wait. A full dawn drive beats two rushed half-days.
Beyond the gates
The Kataragama pilgrimage town sits nearby, and the quieter blocks of Yala — and neighbouring Bundala, a birding paradise — reward travellers who want the wildlife without the crowds.
Planning your visit
Yala combines naturally with the south coast and the hills — most travellers reach it from Galle or Mirissa, or by dropping down from Ella. One night at a camp on the park edge, with a full dawn drive, beats a rushed afternoon visit squeezed into a transfer day. Note that the main block (Block 1) usually closes each September for the dry season; we plan around the closure and, if your dates fall then, switch you to the equally rewarding adjacent blocks or to Wilpattu.
Practical information
Getting there
About 5 hours from Colombo, or an easy add-on from the south coast (Galle/Tangalle, 2–3 hours). Often combined with Ella coming down from the hills.
Where to stay
Luxury tented camps and lodges on the park edge let you wake at the gate; some of the island’s best safari camps are here.
What to eat
Camp kitchens do excellent Sri Lankan barbecues and curries; carry water and snacks for the early drive.
Best time to visit
February–July for the best sightings and driest conditions. Yala’s main block usually closes in September for the dry season — we plan around it.
“Pay for one full private dawn drive rather than two shared half-days. The first hour, before the crowd reaches the leopard, is the whole game.”
