Sigiriya, Cultural Triangle, Sri Lanka

Sigiriya

Destination Guide

A royal palace built atop a 200-metre column of rock, complete with frescoes, a mirror wall and water gardens — Sigiriya is Sri Lanka’s most astonishing single sight, and the centrepiece of the Cultural Triangle.

The eighth wonder

In the fifth century, King Kasyapa raised a fortified palace on the summit of this monolith, approached through the paws of a giant carved lion. The climb passes a gallery of celestial maidens painted on the rock face and the polished mirror wall before reaching the foundations at the top — and a view across the jungle in every direction.

Things to do

Climb Sigiriya itself at first light, and consider the neighbouring rock of Pidurangala for the classic photograph of Sigiriya across the trees. The water gardens at the base are among the oldest landscaped gardens in the world. Nearby, Dambulla’s cave temples and the ruins of Polonnaruwa fill out the triangle.

A base for the triangle

Sigiriya makes the ideal base for two or three nights of heritage — central to the ancient cities, with safari country at Minneriya and Kaudulla close by for the elephant Gathering in the dry season.

Pidurangala & climbing well

For the classic photograph of Sigiriya rising from the jungle, climb neighbouring Pidurangala rock instead — a rougher, quieter scramble with the fortress framed across the trees. Whichever you climb, go at first light: the gates of Sigiriya open early, and the difference between a dawn ascent and a mid-morning one is the difference between cool air and an empty rock, and heat and a queue on the final staircase.

Practical information

Getting there

About 3.5–4 hours from Colombo or the airport by car. Central to Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura.

Where to stay

Design-led jungle hotels and eco-lodges around the rock give cool evenings and dawn access; some have views of Sigiriya from the pool.

What to eat

Dry-zone rice and curry, lake fish, and curd with treacle (kithul) for dessert. Many lodges grow their own vegetables.

Best time to visit

Year-round; February–April is driest. Climb at dawn to beat the heat and the crowds; the Minneriya Gathering peaks August–September.

Ajit’s tip

Be at the gate before it opens and climb Sigiriya first, then do Pidurangala for the view. Most people do it the other way and bake in the queue.
