Sri Lanka punches far above its weight for wildlife, but a great safari is as much about timing and guiding as luck. After thirty years of game drives, here is my honest report on when and where to go.
Leopards: February to July
For leopards, the dry months concentrate animals at water and thin the vegetation, improving your odds. Yala has the highest density anywhere, but it is also the busiest; Wilpattu, larger and quieter, rewards patience with sightings you won’t share with twenty jeeps. Yala’s main block usually closes in September, so we plan around it.
The elephant Gathering: August to September
Each dry season, hundreds of wild elephants converge on the receding Minneriya and Kaudulla reservoirs — the largest gathering of Asian elephants on earth. It is one of the great wildlife spectacles, and it falls exactly when the south coast is wet, making it the perfect summer centrepiece.
How to actually see something
The difference between a magical drive and a frustrating one is almost never the park — it is the guide, the timing and the willingness to wait. We use experienced private trackers, enter as the gate opens, and back one full dawn drive over two rushed half-days. That first hour, before the crowd reaches the leopard, is the whole game.
